Hill, Jonathan The History of Christian Thought: The Fascinating Story of the Great Chrsitain Thinkers and how they helped shape the world as we know it.

Latourette, Kenneth Scott A History of Christianity.

Vols 1-2.  A standard and detailed treatment.  Each volume is over 700 pages (of small type) – a great resource.

McKim, Donald  Theological Turing Points: Major Issues in Christian Thought. 

 McKim traces the historical and theological development of 8 major Christain doctrines from the early centuries to the present (Trinity, Christology, Ecclesiology, Anthropology, Soteriology, Authority, the Sacraments and Eschatology) concentrating on the decisive points in the development of the Church’s theology.  See also, Noll (below).

Davidson, Ivor J.  Public Faith: From Constantine to the Medieval World, Ad 312-600

Kelly, J. N. D.  Early Christian Doctrines (Rev. ed, 1960, 1978).  

This is an excellent and standard treatment of each of the major doctrines from the close of the apostolic age to the Council of Chalcedon (451).

Eusebius, The Church History, Trns & commentary by Paul L. Maier  

This is an excellent translation of an important primary resource.  Anyone interested in early church history should read the primary resources and Eusebius is one of the most important.

Pelikan, Jaroslav.  Credo: Historical and Theological Guide to Creeds and Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition.
