Why do you use a liturgy?

Q:  Why do you follow a set liturgy in your service?

A:  There is, I think, a great misunderstanding that often attends this question, namely the faulty presupposition that some churches are liturgical and others are not.  I say that this is a great misunderstanding because it seems to imply that some churches follow a set order of service while others don’t.  Contra this opinion, it seems to me that the services of most any church can be seen to follow a fairly predictable order of service.  That is, one knows what to expect at any given point, irrespective of the detail in which that order is written out and distributed to the congregation.

That being said I will immediately contradict myself by admitting that there is a clear and recognizable difference between a service which is “liturgical” and one that is not.
